Tight tolerances between the base and the motor assembly and a very positive locking mechanism means you can be sure that once you dial in a depth, it stays locked until you loosen the lever. This base makes it easy to have a firm, comfortable hold on the tool.

The removable fixed base is very compact and, since it’s made of aluminum, it hardly adds any weight to the router. A tighter grip means less chance of a slipping bit when the cutting gets tough. The collet has 8 slots and is extended a 1/4” longer than normal to provide better gripping of the router bit shank by providing more surface contact area. There are 12 detents on the spindle shaft which means faster lock ups and quicker bit changes. To change router bits, there is an easy-reach button that, when depressed, locks the spindle so the collar can be loosened. Machined into the body is a helical groove that acts as a tread for the spinning depth of adjustment collar that stays attached to the body of the router. The no load speed of the motor is 27,000 revolutions per minute (which is pretty darn fast) and to make sure that it keeps it’s cool, there are air vents on the top and bottom of the motor housing that direct air flow over the motor when it is on. This router does not have a variable-speed motor, but this should not be too much trouble unless you get into some really specialized types of work. The soft start, 1.25 HP motor is housed inside the machined aluminum body of the router. The on/off switch is located on the lower side of the plastic housing and features a clear rubber protector that seals it from wood shavings and dust. The top portion of the router’s body is made of black ABS plastic. We were a little bummed out when we found that this kit did not come with a hard shell case. To us, routers are a somewhat a precision type of tool that needs a place to keep them protected and organized when not in use. The kit includes the compact router motor body with a fixed base, plunge base, collet wrench, owners manual and a soft sided nylon storage bag. Our Porter-Cable 450PK router kit arrived in a cardboard box with everything individually packaged inside. This also would make this a great gifts idea for a young home owner or occasional handyman for the holidays which are right around the corner.Porter-Cable 450PK Compact Router Combo Kit Features Everything is in the box so you can tackle many jobs right away. Overall for around $100 the Porter Cable package is a great deal. The blades are also not very high quality but fairly inexpensive so not a big problem. As it stands pretty much all the available accessories are included in the box, more available at Lowe’s or Amazon but it really is just the basics. Had the PC250MTK been compatible it would have been pretty great but the set on the Porter Cable means you are locked into their platform. The universal OIS platform that Bosch, Milwaukee, Ridgid and others have all adopted already have tons of great accessories available. Porter Cable went lone wolf on their accessories which we feel is a big mistake. The bigger problem however is the accessories themselves. Also the long cord is great use but terrible to cram back into the flimsy plastic case.

To start the case is killing me, it just will not shut on the first try ever because the accessories are supposed to be arranged sticking strait up and need to align perfectly to close which doesn’t happen.

Unfortunately this mighty tool does have some short comings which actually have nothing to do with the tool itself. As long as that high tension spring holds up this system will be hard to improve upon. It really could probably be the easiest blade change process of any oscillating tool on the market to date, including the Fein Multimaster which has been the apex of the category. The most impressive aspect of the tool however is the quick changing blade system. Here is the whole list: (1) Wood Blade, (1) Wood/Metal Blade, (1) Precision Wood Blade, (1) Flush Cut Blade for Wood, Drywall and Metal, (1) Sanding Platen, (27) 60-120-240G Sand Paper, (1) Flexible Scraper, (1) Rigid Scraper & (1) Grout Removal Blade. Most impressively a Grout Removal Blade which you typically will not find in any other base level kit.

They also included pretty much every accessory they make in the case right out of the box. Check out this detailed Video from WoodCraft blog: The feel of the unit also seems a little more thought out and comfortable, like they laid out all the competitors and said how can we do this better. To start with they bumped up the horse power to a larger 2.5 amp motor and added a 10’ corded for better worksite maneuverability. Being one of the last to the oscillating tool party has had its advantages for Porter Cable and their new PC250MTK ($104, Amazon) Multi-Tool.
